The Center for Career Development has developed an Engaged Learning Fund by the generosity of Gustavus Alumni donors. These fund are designed to assist students from any major who are in need of funding to complete engaged learning opportunities. Funding can be applied to both academic credit and for non-academic credit opportunities throughout the year. Funding is available for underpaid or unpaid internships and engaged learning opportunities. Students must be actively enrolled at Gustavus to be eligible (First Year – Senior). When applying make sure to be as specific as possible.
Examples of Engaged Learning Opportunities: For remote and in-person credit and non-credit internships, micro-internships, career explorations, research, or conferences related to your career interest that are not affiliated with Gustavus.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Applications will not be approved for an experience completed before the start of the current term or for experiences post graduation.
Funding is not guaranteed. All applications are reviewed by a committee and are additionally subject to the amount available in the fund at the time of the application. A student cannot receive more than $3000 max during their enrollment.
Example: Student “A” receives $750 for a conference their sophomore year. They apply their junior year for $3000 for their SigX internship, the most the student would be eligible for would be $2250 if approved.
Award max. amounts based on the type of experience:
- Conference Attendance will have a max award amount of $750. (may only receive 1 time)
- Non-SigX career related experiences (non-credit internships, job shadowing, volunteer work, conferences) will have a max award amount of $1500.
- SigX for Credit Internship (must be enrolled and complete the SigX co-hort) will have a max award amount of $3000.
If you are selected the amount will be determined based on:
- Financial need.
- Quality of your application reflecting the value of the experience to your future career.
- Number of hours worked per week.
- Total number of days/weeks of the experience.
- Housing expenses (rent or hotel costs)
- Travel expenses
- Food expenses
- Additional needs to complete the experience.
Additional requirements for those selected:
- Thank you to the Engaged Fund donors.
- Reflection and pictures from experience to be used for social media and marketing purposes.
- Any large ticket items such as but not limited to airline or other travel items, hotel or other housing expenses.
- Funding for conference attendance and related expenses can only be used once during their time at Gustavus.
Funding cannot be applied to:
- Experiences required for a student’s academic program such as, but not limited to, nursing or athletic training clinical rotations or student teaching.
- Internships or research done at Gustavus or for Gustavus.
- Gustavus or any institution’s tuition or on campus room and board.
- Attending or participating in a Gustavus club, sport or organizations required or promote event, conference or activity.
- Being funded already through other Gustavus groups, departments or organizations.
- Any exams, certifications, materials, intensives or off-campus instruction.
- Purchasing of professional clothing, household, or personal items.
- Study Abroad Programs
- Start-ups or entrepreneurial experiences.
- An experience completed before the start of the current term.
- Experience post graduation.
