Gustavus Adolphus College: Where Success Stories Begin

Communications Intern, Global Health Ministries

Major: Communication Studies

Minor: Film and Media Studies, Dance, Studio Art, and Arts

Tell us more about your accomplishment.

I completed an unpaid virtual communications internship with Global Health Ministries during the summer of 2023. I worked on the non-profit’s social media and gained valuable experience.

How have the Faculty and Staff helped you become career-ready?

I received plenty of valuable support and assistance from my advisor, Sarah Wolter and Cynthia Favre, who works in the Career Development office. My advisor was always available to give me suggestions and ideas for possible internships in my field of interest and recommendations on which classes to take to further my knowledge and skillsets. I visited the Career Development office multiple times to meet with the staff there, who provided me with guidance and advice on various internship opportunities. They also helped me improve my resume and Handshake presence.

What steps did you take to achieve your accomplishment?

I dedicated numerous hours to searching for internships on Handshake and reviewing opportunities forwarded to me by the Center for Career Development. I applied to more than 20 internship programs before finally finding one that was a perfect fit for me.

What advice would you give to other students?

I have two suggestions. First, start your search process early. I began looking in early October and had applied to most of the roles that interested me by February. Also, make sure that your Handshake profile is current since this will help potential employers see what you’re interested in as they search for candidates.

Why do you think a prospective student should consider Gustavus?

Gustavus has a lot to offer! The Center for Career Development staff are knowledgeable and always willing to help you prepare for the future. The Professors are also approachable and supportive, both inside and outside the classroom. Gustavus is a welcoming community that values inclusivity. As a student, you’ll have opportunities for success, personal growth, and the freedom to explore your interests.
