Welcome to Gustavus Adolphus College’s Student Stories Series!

2nd Global Symposium on AI in Dentistry Attendee at Harvard Medical School

Major: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Minor: Public Health & Chemistry

What was/is your career opportunity/experience (i.e. internship, shadowing experience, research)?

As a student attending the symposium on artificial intelligence in dentistry, I will participate in learning workshops on AI and its relevance in dentistry as well as learn from and network with international dentists and educators. I will get to explore the psychological roots of AI and how this is applied in the dental field and beyond. Specifically, I will learn about the importance of AI in dental research, education, and clinical practice and how AI is shaping a new world in dentistry. With this, I will dive into the relationship between AI, dentists, and patients and learn how AI can assist dentists in diagnostic accuracy and improve patient care.

How did you get the opportunity/experience? What steps did you take to achieve this?

While in Nebraska for a pre-dental program, the symposium was mentioned briefly as a great learning opportunity. I found the symposium online and was further intrigued by the topic of the ever-advancing artificial intelligence in dentistry, but didn’t take any action steps immediately. I kept thinking about it and kept an open mind about the opportunity despite being a little intimidated. After applying and receiving the Engaged Learning Fund, it confirmed that I would be able to go and honestly, it gave me confidence that I was meant to attend.

Who were some of the people who helped you most at Gustavus to get this opportunity? What did you learn from them?

Heather Banks in the Center for Career Development as well as Addy Schloo, Gustavus alum ’24. They both encouraged me to apply for the Engaged Learning Funds and take advantage of this amazing learning opportunity. I learned even if you aren’t confident, always keep and open mind and give it a shot. You never know how amazing can something can turn out if you just try!

How did the Engaged Learning Funds help you be able to complete this experience?

The engaged learning funds allowed me to travel to Boston for the in-person symposium. Without financial aid, I would not have been able to attend this dental symposium.

Anything else you want to share about your experience working with Career Development?

I am so grateful that Gustavus provides opportunities for students who otherwise couldn’t participate due to financial limitations.

How have you applied things you’ve learned here at Gustavus to this opportunity? (i.e., Career & Self Development, Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology)

This experience required me to utilize my professional and communication skills effectively to make connections with the very successful individuals there.
