Welcome to Gustavus Adolphus College’s Student Stories Series!
American College Dance Association Conference Attendee
Major: Psychology and Dance
What was/is your career opportunity/experience (i.e. internship, shadowing experience, research)?
ACDA is a conference in which college dance programs from around the region bring work to present, both for adjudication and for show. We are also presented with the opportunity to take class from many different teachers and learn a variety of styles. Depending on the selection of work we are brining, I will have the opportunity to perform for and learn from experienced professionals in the field.
How did you get the opportunity/experience? What steps did you take to achieve this?
I have spent countless hours rehearsing work to be presented on stage, both for this conference and others. I am taking several classes related to choreography creation and dance technique. I have been in both faculty and student choreographed work here at GAC. I auditioned to be in a piece that was taken to the conference.
Who were some of the people who helped you most at Gustavus to get this opportunity? What did you learn from them?
Jill Patterson, Melissa Rolnick, and Sarah Hauss have encouraged me so much in my dance career here. I’ve learned so much, from technique to company policies to life lessons.
How did the Engaged Learning Funds help you be able to complete this experience?
It provided me with the registration and hotel funds to attend this event!
How have you applied things you’ve learned here at Gustavus to this opportunity? (i.e., Career & Self Development, Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology)
It’s impacted the type of dancer I want to be and how I present my self in dance spaces.
