The Midwest Clinic in Chicago Attendee
Major: Music Education, Music w/ Honors, Spanish
What was/is your career opportunity/experience (i.e. internship, shadowing experience, research)?
I was able to attend The Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
How did you get the opportunity/experience? What steps did you take to achieve this?
I applied for funding to attend the clinic through the Engaged Learning Fund. Once I received funding, I was then able to set up travel and attend the conference in Chicago for three days.
Tell us more about your accomplishment.
I attended The Midwest Clinic in Chicago for three days to participate in sessions for music educators. These sessions were on topics such as instrumental fundamentals, score study, conducting techniques, and community building and management.
Who were some of the people who helped you most at Gustavus to get this opportunity? What did you learn from them?
Julie Rudolf was able to help expedite my Engaged Learning Fund application process, and I’m grateful to her.
How did the Engaged Learning Funds help you be able to complete this experience?
The funds the Engaged Learning Fund was able to provide made it possible for me to attend the conference. Traveling to and spending time in downtown Chicago is very costly, and I would not have been able to afford the registration fees or travel and food costs without assistance.
Anything else you want to share about your experience working with Career Development?
The Center for Career Development was prompt and helpful when I reached out to them.
How have you applied things you’ve learned here at Gustavus to this opportunity? (i.e., Career & Self Development, Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology)
My Education and Methods classes prepared me well to navigate interactions in a professional environment. I felt confident representing myself and speaking to both those with similar levels of experience and those with much more experience in the field.
