Intern at Harry Meyering Center – Mankato

Major: Sociology/Anthropology

What was/is your career opportunity/experience (i.e. internship, shadowing experience, research)?

I was able to Intern at the Harry Meyering Center in Mankato, MN.

How did you get the opportunity/experience? What steps did you take to achieve this?

My Health Professions advisor suggested HMC as a potential internship site for the semester, and I used their website to submit an application.

Tell us more about your accomplishment.

When initially interviewing with my supervisor, I specified that I was interested in the recreation/activity-based internships they had advertised on their site. I was then offered an intern position in the Day Activity program at their main Homestead office location, and I had a great experience. I had the opportunity to work directly with residents and program directors to execute daily enrichment activities and promote connection between residents.

Who were some of the people who helped you most at Gustavus to get this opportunity? What did you learn from them?

The Center for Career Development pointed me towards how to register the internship as a for-credit experience. They also helped me obtain funding from the Engaged Learning Fund.

How did the Engaged Learning Funds help you be able to complete this experience?

The Engaged Learning Fund generously reimbursed my transportation fees to and from Mankato, which helped greatly.
