Conference Presenter at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology Conference

Major: Exercise Physiology and Psychological Science

What was/is your career opportunity/experience (i.e. internship, shadowing experience, research)?

I was able to conduct research over the semester about the social media fitness app Strava with a couple of my classmates. This experience was very educational, and I was able to learn how to conduct a research study from start to finish. We have taken this project to other schools to present, and I have learned so many different skills from it!

How did you get the opportunity/experience? What steps did you take to achieve this?

We applied to the conference almost a year in advance, and waited to see if we were approved. Luckily, we received a letter of acceptance and we made it all work to head out to Las Vegas to present! We practiced our presentation many times, went to other schools in the MIAC to practice, and made sure everything was put together prior to leaving to the conference.

Tell us more about your accomplishment (include title, role, location, program, etc.)

We were accepted to present our research at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology conference in Las Vegas, NV! This conference is the largest sport psychology conference in the world! We were honored in being able to share our work with so many other people equally interested in sport psychology.

Who were some of the people who helped you most at Gustavus to get this opportunity? What did you learn from them?

Hayley Russell is hands down the one person who has helped me the most at Gustavus with this opportunity. She has helped me to be the person I am, and has taught me the steps in being to properly conduct research while enjoying it at the same time!

How did the Engaged Learning Funds help you be able to complete this experience?

As this conference involved a decent amount of traveling and cost, I am grateful to have received the Engaged Learning Fund to relive some stress around the money aspect and have been able to experience all of the conference had to offer.

Anything else you want to share about your experience working with Career Development?

I greatly appreciate the support from the Center for Career Development, and would not be able to do these things without the help!

How have you applied things you’ve learned here at Gustavus to this opportunity? (i.e., Career & Self Development, Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology)

I have applied all of the listed qualities that I have learned at Gustavus in this opportunity. With all my educational experiences here, I have continued to learn and apply these skills in every day life and in these experiences I am grateful to be a part of
