Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic

Major: Instrumental Music Education, Music Honors in Conducting

What was/is your career opportunity/experience?

I attended the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.

How did you get the opportunity/experience? What steps did you take to achieve this?

I first attended the Midwest Clinic when I was a sophomore through the recommendation of my teacher, and I enjoyed it so much that I plan to return every year! At first, it was difficult and nerve wracking to arrange my own travel plans, but now I have gained confidence that I can travel independently from Minneapolis to Chicago.

Tell us more about your accomplishment.

The Midwest Clinic is the largest band and orchestra clinic in the country, if not the world. It is a place where thousands of music educators come to learn more about teaching music, conducting, instrument pedagogy, and attend performances by professional, collegiate, high school, and middle school ensembles. Educators also have the opportunity to network and establish professional connections by meeting other educators at the conference. As I am heading into my teaching career, the information I can learn at the Midwest Clinic will be valuable to being a successful teacher.

How did Career Development/Office of Health Professions assist you?

The Career Development Center made me aware of the Engaged Learning Fund, and I applied for the scholarship.

How did the Engaged Learning Funds help you be able to complete this experience?

The Engaged Learning Fund made the trip much more affordable for me. All Midwest Clinic attendees have to organize their travel and pay for hotel costs, registration, and food. The Engaged Learning fund was able to defray these costs, so I could focus on learning and professional development instead of finances.
