Gustavus Adolphus College: Where Success Stories Begin

Content Intern, Form + Content Gallery

Major: Art History & Anthropology

Minor: Arts Entrepreneurship

Tell us more about your accomplishment.

I’m thrilled to share that I will intern at Form + Content Gallery in Minneapolis this summer! During this internship, I will have the opportunity to work directly with artists in their studios, learning about different materials and working methods, and gaining insight into the operations of professional artists. Additionally, I will be involved in various gallery activities such as organizing events, preparing art displays, managing social media marketing, attending meetings, and more. This internship is a fantastic way for me to gain hands-on experience in the art world.

Why did you choose Gustavus Adolphus College?

I chose Gustavus because it had everything I was looking for in a college. It offered the area I wanted to pursue, it had a touring orchestra, it accepted all my credits from PSEO and AP in high school, it was a nice location and campus, and everyone was really welcoming from the get-go. Everything just fell into place perfectly for me.

How have the faculty helped you become career-ready?

All of the professors I have had have been excellent, especially the art faculty! Professor Kristin Lowe recommended me for an internship and helped me prepare for it. My advisors are also fantastic and incredibly supportive. They have helped me secure jobs and internships. Thanks to my advisor, Suzanne Wilson, I have another internship lined up and will be working as a teaching assistant in the fall.

What was your most meaningful experience at Gustavus, and why?

One of my most meaningful experiences at Gustavus was with my first-semester FTS group. The professor, Betsy Byers, encouraged us to consider art from a different perspective. On our last day of class, she did an activity with a piece of string that was very touching, and she gave each of us a tube of paint that she associated with us. I still have my paint and the piece of string. It serves as a reminder that I will always be connected to these people at Gustavus, even as we go down our separate paths.

Which college courses prepared you for your career and why?

I’ve been fortunate to take some really impactful college courses that have helped prepare me for my career. Betsy Byers’ FTS, Kristin Lowe’s Day Course, Meagan Marsh Pine’s Graphic Design class, and all the classes I’ve had with Colleen Stockmann have really shaped my perspective on art. I love how these professors approach art – each one brings a different perspective, and their passion truly shines through. Not only have they taught me valuable practical skills, but they’ve also inspired me in so many ways.

Tell us about where your journey with your accomplishment began.

I chatted with Professor Lowe after class one day, and she noticed how much I love art and how dedicated I am to making it a career. She asked if I’d be keen on an internship and offered to help me with the application process by contacting her network. She was even willing to lend me a hand with my resume.

What steps did you take to achieve your accomplishment?

I had to do several things I had never done before, such as getting a professional headshot taken on campus, writing a resume and cover letter, and going in for an interview. Amidst all this, I met with Professor Lowe to get her insight and advice.

Which individual or mentor has influenced you most, and in what way?

Professor Kristin Lowe has had the most influence on me. She is incredibly passionate about her job, art, and helping her students. Whenever she speaks to me, her excitement is contagious. She also encourages me to dream big and imagine the possibilities for my future. In a challenging field like art, she makes everything feel achievable.

What advice would you give to other students?

I would advise students to focus on building strong relationships with their professors. Being friendly, kind, and hardworking can make a big difference! The professors at Gustavus are dedicated to their work and are eager to help students. So, don’t hesitate to engage with them, and you’ll definitely reap the rewards.

Why do you think a prospective student should consider Gustavus?

Gustavus has been amazing in helping me prepare for my career. The professors are always there to help connect you to opportunities or provide recommendations. It’s especially great if you’re interested in non-STEM fields because the professors are so personable, and the smaller department sizes are beneficial for building strong relationships and connections.
