Gustavus Adolphus College: Where Success Stories Begin

Editorial Intern, Nordlyset Literary Agency

Major: English

Minor: Comparative Literature & African Diaspora Studies

Tell us more about your accomplishment.

During the spring, I finished a hybrid internship with Nordlyset Literary Agency in Minneapolis. Throughout my internship, I learned about the various aspects of the publishing process, including reviewing submissions, editing manuscripts, writing catalog copy, and creating marketing materials. I also had the opportunity to attend the Minnesota Book Awards in May! This experience was an incredible introduction to the publishing industry and provided me with valuable skills that I can apply to future career opportunities.

Why did you choose Gustavus Adolphus College?

I chose Gustavus because of the distinct feeling of community here on campus. I was looking for a school where I could pursue various interests while building strong connections with my peers, professors, and other community members, and Gustavus turned out to be the perfect school for me. I have a passion for choir and have had the opportunity to sing and tour internationally with the Gustavus Choir. I’ve also been able to pursue my interests in literature and writing with equal enthusiasm. The small class sizes were also an important factor in my decision, and my experience has been incredible. In a recent research lab course, I worked closely with four other students and my professor to delve into the nuances and debates of Black feminist theory, and our course culminated with a presentation at a faculty shop talk.

How did the Center for Career Development assist you?

The Center for Career Development was amazing! They helped me with everything during my internship journey. From creating a super resume and a top-notch cover letter to getting the experience registered for credit, they were with me every step of the way. The best part? I could fund this internship with the Engaged Learning Fund, which took away some of the financial worries. Honestly, The Center for Career Development is an invaluable resource on campus!

Which individual, student organization, or mentor has influenced you most, and in what way?

Working in the Writing Center has had an incredible influence on me personally, professionally, and academically. We have such a dedicated community of writers from diverse backgrounds and majors, and working with them has made me a better writer and person. Through individual sessions with clients, I have expanded the ways I think about the process of writing, something that impacts me every day in my coursework and my life. Outreach programs through the Writing Center have also given me opportunities to give back to the broader Gustavus and St. Peter communities, from working with students on fellowship applications and organizing campus events to helping high school students prepare college application essays. Eric Vrooman, the Director of the Writing Center, has also helped connect me with internship opportunities. This summer I will be interning with Bellwether Media, made possible through a connection with a former Writing Center tutor.

What advice would you give to other students or prospective students?

When it comes to opportunities, apply for/say yes to/seek out anything you’re interested in. The more applications you submit, the easier each one becomes, and you never know where the next amazing experience is hiding. Also, lean on your community! Faculty, peers, and the expansive network of Gustavus alums are incredibly supportive resources, so reach out and use your connections!
