Gustavus Adolphus College: Where Success Stories Begin
University of Minnesota – Duluth
Major: Biology
Tell us more about your accomplishment.
This fall, I will be starting my first year of medical school at the University of Minnesota – Duluth Campus in 2023.
Why did you choose Gustavus Adolphus College?
I chose Gustavus because of the small, close-knit feel of the campus. When I toured the campus, I immediately felt at home on the hill. I knew that I would be able to make great, life-long friends and build meaningful relationships with my peers, professors, and advisors, which was very important to me. Another factor that drew me to Gustavus was the Liberal Arts designation. I knew that my time there would provide me with a well-rounded and rigorous academic foundation, which would prepare me for medical school.
How have the Faculty and Staff helped you become career-ready?
Being at a small college, I had the opportunity to meet with my professors and advisors whenever I needed to. I felt incredibly supported throughout my journey and knew that they were invested in my success. Whether I had questions about the lecture material, needed advice on career paths and applying to professional school, or wanted to have a conversation, they were always available to help me. Even after graduation, I have continued to receive support from them, which has been wonderful.
What was your most meaningful experience at Gustavus, and why?
One of the most meaningful experiences I had during my time at Gustavus was when I got the chance to travel to Alaska and job shadow healthcare providers during my J-Term. It was a great opportunity for me to see how medicine is practiced in a different state with a different patient population. This experience helped me to further prepare myself for medical school. When I wasn’t shadowing in the clinic, I got to go dog sledding, which was an incredible and unforgettable experience that I will always cherish as one of my favorite memories.
What steps did you take to achieve your accomplishment?
First, I completed all my prerequisite courses. Then, I focused on the MCAT exam. In addition, I volunteered, got involved on campus, and job shadowed to strengthen my application. During my time at Gustavus, I also worked as a Personal Care Assistant in healthcare. During my gap year, while applying to medical school, I worked as a Phlebotomist at my hometown hospital.
How did the Office of Health Professions assist you?
The Office of Health Professions played a critical role in assisting and guiding me on my journey to medical school. They helped me select the appropriate classes to fulfill the medical school prerequisites, reviewed my personal statement and writings for my applications, and even conducted mock interviews -after I graduated- that prepared me for my interviews. The support and expertise of Heather and Heidi were invaluable throughout the entire process.
Which individual has influenced you most, and in what way?
My roommate Lauren has had the most influence on me. We were randomly matched during our first year and became best friends. Lauren has been my support system and biggest cheerleader when I was stressed about my final exams, needed someone to review an essay, or worried that I would not get into medical school. We have made countless memories together, and she has helped me to realize that college and life are more than just labs, exams, and medical school applications. She offered me the balance I needed – everyone needs a Lauren in their life!
What advice would you give to other students or prospective students?
I want to remind students that hard work, perseverance, and determination pay off. The road to your goal may not be free of curves and bumps, but it is crucial to navigate around them to reach your final destination. It is also important to surround yourself with people who believe in your abilities and support your aspirations. When you face a barrier, having supportive individuals to offer advice and help you through your journey is essential.
